The Codes Series focuses on words or phrases that have become “coded” in American culture or subcultures. The printed images are composed of marks that reference cross-stitch patterns, which involve codes that correspond to certain colors of embroidery floss, reflecting the way language can correspond to a particular person or group of people. These codes are a visual and conceptual connection to the coded language that is embedded in our culture. In addition to the works on paper, this series includes cross-stitch pieces on fabric created by actually employing the codes found on the prints. The visible results of the use of the printed codes help the viewers connect to the concept of the coded language in the series.
